It's time again to look at the stars during the Night of the Night! This annual event takes place on the weekend when we switch from summer to winter time, turning back the clock one hour. The aim of the Night of the Night is to raise awareness about darkness and the impact of light pollution on nature and our view of the night sky.

Activities are organised across the country and the lighting of various monuments and public buildings is reduced or even switched off completely. More information can be found elsewhere.

Volkssterrenwacht Amsterdam at Camping Zeeburg

This year, too, the Volkssterrenwacht Amsterdam will not miss out. From about 19:30 we will be present with a number of telescopes at Camping Zeeburg. In clear weather, you will be able to view various objects in the night sky, with expert explanations from our members. In cloudy or other bad weather, we will offer a presentation with planetarium software so that we can display the starry sky on a large screen.

The moon does not rise until well after midnight, so we will not get to see it tonight. Venus sets just over an hour after the sun, while Mars and Jupiter do not rise until later in the evening. These three planets will be too low on the horizon to be clearly visible. Fortunately, Saturn will be clearly visible throughout the evening. Saturn's rings in particular are worth looking at through a telescope - an impressive sight that makes everyone happy!

We can also try to get a glimpse of Neptune, although this is a bit difficult due to the city's light pollution. This planet is visible as a tiny blue sphere, which is unusual considering its distance of 4.5 billion kilometres.

The night sky also offers plenty of other objects to observe. The Andromeda Nebula and the globular cluster M13 in Hercules are high in the sky. Later in the evening, the Pleiades will also become more visible again. We can also try to view the ring nebula M57 in Lyra and the crescent nebula M27. Bright double stars like Albireo and Alcor/Mizar are also in good shape.
